Sizing

The full length of the slip lead is approx 155cm (over 5ft) - but you'll need to account for how much length is looped over your dog's head to determine the length of lead remaining (hope that makes sense!)

The 'standard' size is approx 10mm thick plus the stitched seam, suitable for gun dogs (Labrador, Springer). We also provide a finer version for smaller dogs or if you simply prefer a thinner lead (eg. some people also use as a figure-8 over the muzzle and the finer version therefore less bulky).

Materials

  • Made of soft European leather battle-tested against the elements.
  • Colour-fast (will not leech dye onto your dog's coat)*
  • Internal polyester cord is load-bearing into the hundreds of kilograms.
  • Solid brass or nickel-plated (silver) solid load-bearing fittings to ensure strength of the lead and security of your dog.

*do not allow the leather to come into contact with chemicals from liquid flea treatments

IMPORTANT

Important note about slip lead usage:slip leads are commonly used by gun dog handlers and in the show ring, as well as at kennels and among dog groomers. With correct and safe use - also as a Figure-8 over the muzzle - they are ideal for many breeds. You must understand correct and safe handling of a slip lead before use or consult a professional dog trainer.

Care Instructions

Our collars and leads are handmade using carefully selected leather, solid brass or silver fittings, and traditional craftsmanship.

Leather is a natural material, and every dog leads a different life. With a little care, your Dogs & Horses collar or lead will continue to look its best and provide many years of reliable service.

Everyday Care

For most dogs, caring for leather is wonderfully straightforward.

After muddy or dusty walks, simply wipe away any dirt with a soft, damp cloth and allow the leather to dry naturally.

For more stubborn marks, a mild leather cleaner or saddle soap may be used. Always test any cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first.

Leather & Water

Leather is naturally water-resistant, but it is not waterproof.

If your collar or lead becomes wet, simply allow it to dry naturally at room temperature before using it again.

Avoid drying leather on a radiator, using a hairdryer or leaving it in direct sunlight, as excessive heat can cause leather to dry out and shorten its life.

If your dog swims regularly, we'd recommend removing the collar beforehand whenever practical, as repeated soaking isn't ideal for any leather product.

Once the leather is completely dry, an occasional application of a quality leather conditioner or beeswax-based leather balm will help keep it supple and protected.

Conditioning

Leather occasionally benefits from a little nourishment.

Apply a small amount of a good-quality leather conditioner or beeswax-based leather balm using a soft cloth, then gently buff once absorbed.

A little goes a long way.

For collars and leads used in normal conditions, conditioning once or twice a year is usually sufficient.

Brass & Silver Fittings

Our fittings are available in either solid brass or silver, depending on your chosen finish.

Solid brass is a natural metal and will gradually develop a richer patina over time. Many customers enjoy this character, though it can easily be polished back to a brighter finish using a suitable brass polish if preferred.

Silver fittings require very little maintenance. Simply wipe them clean with a soft cloth after use to help maintain their appearance.

When using any metal polish, take care to avoid contact with the leather and ensure all residue has been removed before allowing your dog to wear the collar or lead.

Regular Inspection

We recommend inspecting your collar or lead from time to time, particularly around the buckle, trigger hook, rivets and stitched areas.

Like any item used every day, leather accessories will naturally experience wear over time. Regular inspection helps ensure your dog's comfort and continued safety.

Flea & Tick Treatments

Please avoid allowing leather to come into contact with liquid spot-on flea or tick treatments.

The chemicals contained in these products can damage leather and may affect its colour or finish. We recommend waiting until the treatment has fully dried before replacing your dog's collar.

Storage

When not in use, store your collar or lead somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight or excessive heat.

Avoid storing leather in sealed plastic bags or airtight containers, as natural leather benefits from being able to breathe.

A Natural Material

Every piece of leather is unique.

Small variations in grain, texture and colour are part of the beauty of genuine leather and should not be considered imperfections. They are simply characteristics of a natural material.

With sensible care, your Dogs & Horses collar or lead will continue to perform beautifully for years to come.
